Folkenvale is a magical oasis on 12 acres in beautiful Meadow Vista, CA, 45 minutes northeast of Sacramento. It sits in a river valley at 2,000 feet of elevation in the magnificent Sierra foothills (above the fog and below the snow), on the unceded land of the indigenous Nisenan people, represented today by the United Auburn Indian Community. To learn more about their work, including land restoration, visit www.auburnrancheria.com.
At the confluence of a year-round creek and the Bear River, Folkenvale includes a cozy but expansive home and healing matrix of land replete with abundant wildlife, small waterfalls, stunning valley views, on-land hiking trails, river frontage for swimming/fishing/resting, a hammock forest, outdoor shower, picnic tables and hot tub.
Retreat guests will enjoy comfortable private or semi-private accommodations, wood stove, nourishing home-cooked food (some of it sourced from nearby Foothill Roots Farm), and all the aforementioned amenities. Watch the nightly sunset and stargaze on the deck, fall asleep to river music at the end of a long day, and wake up to birdsong with a cup of coffee in the solarium. Just to exist here, time out of time, heals body and soul.
Folkenvale is available as a straightforward vacation rental here or on all the traditional rental sites. Additionally, Molly will hold several retreats a year here: check this space for offerings, fill out this form to get on the mailing list, or subscribe to her newsletter. Molly is also available as catering & hospitality coordinator if you would like to rent Folkenvale for a themed retreat where you offer the content and recruit the attendees, and Molly handles care & feeding. Folkenvale can accommodate between 5-15 people depending on sleeping arrangements. Email her form on the Work with Molly page to start a conversation.
Here are a couple of testimonies from recent retreatants:
"The moment I entered Folkenvale, I felt a sense of peace and relaxation. It is a beautiful home on a gorgeous piece of land, with stunning views of the Bear River Valley. There are numerous places, in both the house and on the land, where one can find sanctuary and I enjoyed a lovely day discovering some of those spots."

I’m grateful to Molly for extending her unique style of hospitality at Folkenvale Retreats. Situated hard by the Bear River in magical Meadow Vista, it was the perfect place to get rewired. I’d been actively and intentionally not writing, tired of my own words, and the increasingly long corpse of my own work trailing behind me. It was time to break free. By mid morning I looked up and had already drafted a cluster of new poems. I also opened the colored pencils and sketchbook I’d been hauling around for years, and began to draw again. Even my sighs became prayers. And a voice from the past found a new way to speak past death. It was all too much to hope for, and I still don’t understand how she does it, but Molly has been unlocking closed hearts for decades now with her gift of hospitality and her simple, honest, complete presence. Molly is what we would build if we could build people. Sure, she’s wrong about the film “Melancholia” and wanted me to eat more (or at least sample) her delicious home made food, but she’s a reliable guide down to the river and deeper into the soul. If you’re looking for a retreat to restore your sanity and meet lovely and amazing people then Folkenvale is your place. ~Gary Percesepe

A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. It is a scaffolding on which a worker can stand and labor with both hands at sections of time. A schedule is a mock-up of reason and order—willed, faked, and so brought into being; it is a peace and a haven set into the wreck of time.” ~ Annie Dillard, The Writing Life |
